Not everyone who survives trauma becomes a cycle breaker. What One Survivor’s Story Teaches Us About Trauma, Resilience, and Choosing a Different Path

But what truly stands out is when someone chooses to break the cycle that shaped them.

In a recent episode of the Walk With Me Podcast, I spoke with Adrienne Caldwell, author of Unbroken: Life Outside the Lines. Her story is not easy to hear—but it’s an important reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of choosing a different path.

Adrienne’s life began in an environment defined by generational trauma, instability, and poverty. Her mother struggled with schizophrenia, and throughout her childhood Adrienne experienced abuse, homelessness, and constant upheaval. By the time she graduated high school, she had attended 13 different schools.

Yet somehow, within all that chaos, Adrienne found something that would become her lifeline.

Education.

Finding Stability in the Midst of Chaos

For Adrienne, school became more than a place to learn.

It became a place where the rules made sense.

Where effort led to reward.

Where she could excel.

While much of her life felt unpredictable and unsafe, academics gave her structure and purpose. That determination carried her through high school and into college, where she eventually graduated with honors.

But the journey forward was far from easy.

When Survival Turns Into Self-Destruction

Like many survivors of childhood trauma, Adrienne faced periods of addiction and self-medication.

Substances became a way to cope with the emotional weight of everything she had endured. For a time, life spiraled downward.

What changed?

Motherhood.

The birth of her daughter became a defining turning point. Adrienne made a conscious decision that the cycles she experienced growing up would not continue into the next generation.

That decision changed everything.

The Courage to Break Generational Cycles

Breaking cycles isn’t dramatic.

It’s not a single heroic moment.

More often, it’s a series of quiet decisions:

• Choosing sobriety • Choosing responsibility • Choosing healing • Choosing a different future for your children

Adrienne describes it as simply taking one step forward at a time.

Not perfection.

Just movement.

And those small steps eventually build an entirely different life.

Why Stories Like This Matter

Many people carry trauma in ways that remain invisible to the outside world.

Stories like Adrienne’s remind us:

  • Healing is possible
  • Resilience can be learned
  • The past does not have to define the future

Perhaps most importantly, they remind us that cycle breakers exist—and their courage can inspire others to begin their own healing journey.
